Prof Morling , UK visited Saveetha University campus

SAVEETHA SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
SAVEETHA UNIVERSITY
VISIT BY PROF RICHARD C.S MORLING, UK

Prof Morling , UK visited our campus on 18th February 2015. He also delivered a special lecture on  the “ History of VLSI Design” . This programme was organized in association with Saveetha Chapter of  IET (UK) (Institution of Engineering & Technology.  More than 150 participants including students and faculty participated in the programme.

Dr. P Shankar Principal Saveetha School of Engineering welcomed the gathering and also honoured the Chief Guest.

Prof Morling presented a comprehensive overview on the development of VLSI circuits and devices.  He commenced his lecture from the use of thermionic vacuum tubes to design electronic logics, which were huge, less energy efficient and generating lot of heat.  During the mid-1920s, several inventors attempted devices that were intended to control current in solid-state diodes and convert them into triodes. With the invention of transistors at Bell Labs in 1947, the field of electronics shifted from vacuum tubes to solid-state devices.

One problem was the size of the circuit. A complex circuit, like a computer, was dependent on speed. As the components of the computer were too large or the wires interconnecting them too long, the electric signals couldn't travel fast enough through the circuit, thus making the computer too slow to be effective.
He also explained the process of fabrication of electronic chips and explained the lower size limit from basic physics considerations. Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single chip.
Our Chief Guest also explained when the pacemaker stops due to Atrial fibrillation how the chip in a pacemaker sends electrical pulses to restore the heartbeat.
He also explained that when testing of the equipment was done it was done outside because the size was large and over the period of time technology has been improved to reduce size.
A Question Answer session was held later where many students and also faculty members asked some questions.
Finally, vote of thanks was presented  by HOD EEE Dept. Dr. P. Muthukannan.
Following the Program a meeting with all HoDs and coordinators of IET accreditation team was held at Board Room, SSE. Prof Morling being a member of the review board in IET Accreditation clarified most of the queries for uploading the documents requested.
